Things to Do in Vryheid: A Local Guide to Northern Natal

Victorian architecture lines the streets, battlefield sites are within an hour's drive, and the surrounding countryside offers dams, reserves and birding that most travellers never see. History and Heritage Sites Vryheid has a rich layered history — Zulu, Voortrekker, British and Afrikaner pasts all meet here. Start at the Vryheid Museum on Landdrost Street, which traces the story of the short-lived Nieuwe Republiek from 1884. The Lucas Meijer House, named after the Republic's first president, has been preserved as part of the museum complex and gives a sense of how the town's early leaders lived. Budget about 90 minutes for a relaxed visit. The Battlefields Route Three significant battles from the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War and the First Anglo-Boer War took place within an hour of Vryheid: Hlobane, Khambula, and Scheepers Nek. Signage on-site is modest, so we recommend either booking a local guide or reading our battlefields route itinerary before you set out. The landscape itself is the attraction — wide plains, rocky outcrops and cattle country that has changed little since the events unfolded. Nature and the Outdoors Vryheid Hill Nature Reserve sits on the southern edge of town and is a 30-minute drive up to the top. The reserve has easy trails, panoramic views over the town and KwaZulu-Natal's Northern plains, and is a favourite with local birders. Klipfontein and Bivane Dams, both under an hour away, are good stops for fishing, picnics and birdlife — bring your own food and drinks as facilities are basic. For a longer day out, Itala Game Reserve is roughly 90 minutes away and has black and white rhino, giraffe, zebra and antelope. Self-drive is possible but pack a full tank and snacks. Where to Eat and Drink Vryheid's dining scene is small but friendly. You'll find a handful of cafés and steakhouses along Mark and High Streets. Getting There Vryheid is roughly a three-hour drive from Durban on the N2 and R34, or about five and a half hours from Johannesburg via the N11. The roads are in reasonable condition for a self-drive. Small regional airports at Richards Bay and Pietermaritzburg bring you within two to three hours by car.
